What is the best age to learn fencing? Fencing can be learned as early as the age of 8, and it is never too late to start learning. Fencing is a lifetime sport and there are competitions for every age group, including Veterans (40+, 50+ and 60+). Is fencing a dangerous sport? Today, fencing is one of the safest sports, as the risk of serious injury is very low compared to most other sports. However, safety guidelines for equipment and behavior have to be strictly followed to ensure the well being of all our members and spectators. The Encinitas Fencing Academy requires USFA tournament safety standards for all club activity that may include contact. Will I need own equipment to participate in a fencing course? The Encinitas Fencing Academy provides all gear for our introduction courses. All you will need to bring to this class are clean indoor court shoes (we recommend tennis, volleyball or handball shoes) and comfortable athletic attire. Jeans, open toes shoes, or shoes worn outside are not accepted. For all other activities we recommend our students to acquire full safety gear, however, we have equipment available for rent. We require our students to wear full safety gear as defined by the USFA tournament rules for all activity that may include contact. The gear consists of a fencing jacket, underarm protector (plastron), fencing knickers, knee high socks, a glove and a fencing mask. In addition we require female students to wear chest protectors and recommend male students to wear a protective cup. Do you offer courses in my area? Our main practice facility is located at 613 Westlake Street in Encinitas, CA. During the summer we offer camps at several other loactions, such at the Ecke Family YMCA. Can Fencing get me into College? Today, application for higher education has become very competitive, and we have seen several instances of fencing being the difference maker in the admission of our students. Many of the Nation’s top academic institutions - like Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Notre Dame and Stanford - have a rich history in the sport [see NCAA men , women]. Because fencing trains the mind as much as the body, it will certainly look good on any application. The Encinitas Fencing Academy has produced several recruits for NCAA division I and II programs. Is The Encinitas Fencing Academy member of a Federation? Yes, The Encinitas Fencing Academy is a registered member of the United States Fencing Association (USFA), which itself is a part of the Federation International d’Escrime (FIE, seated in Switzerland). The Encinitas Fencing Academy is located in the San Diego Division of the USFA’s Pacific Coast Section. |
