FAQ
The following are some frequently asked questions about fencing in general and the Encinitas Fencing Academy in particular. Feel free to contact us if you need any additional information. We are looking forward hearing from you.

What is the best age to learn fencing?

Fencing can be learned as early as the age of 7, and it is never too late to start learning. Fencing is a lifetime sport and there are competitions for every age group, including Veterans (40+, 50+ and 60+).

Is fencing a dangerous sport?

Today, fencing is one of the safest sports, as the risk of serious injury is very low compared to most other sports. However, safety guidelines for equipment and behavior have to be strictly followed to ensure the well being of all our members and spectators. The Encinitas Fencing Academy requires USFA tournament safety standards for all club activity that may include contact.

Will I need own equipment to participate in a fencing course?

The Encinitas Fencing Academy provides all gear for our introduction courses [see C1 ]. All you will need to bring to this class are indoor court shoes (we recommend tennis, volleyball or handball shoes) and comfortable sports clothing.
For all other activities we recommend our students to acquire full safety gear, however, we have equipment available for rent. We require our students to wear full safety gear as defined by the USFA tournament rules for all activity that may include contact. The gear consists of a fencing jacket, underarm protector (plastron), fencing knickers, knee high socks, a glove and a fencing mask. In addition we require female students to wear chest protectors and male students to wear a protective cup.

Do you offer courses in my area?

The Encinitas Fencing Academy offers courses at several locations throughout the San Diego Division [see Locations]. We are always looking to offer courses in new locations as well, so contact us if you do not find a location that is convenient for you. In addition to group courses, we also offer private lessons in the convenience of your own home.

Can Fencing get me into College?

Today, application for higher education has become very competitive, and we have seen several instances of fencing being the difference maker in the admission of our students. Many of the Nation’s top academic institutions - like Princeton, Columbia and Stanford - have a rich history in the sport [see NCAA men , women]. Because fencing trains the mind as much as the body, it will certainly look good on any application.

Is The Encinitas Fencing Academy member of a Federation?

Yes, The Encinitas Fencing Academy is a registered member of the United States Fencing Association (USFA), which itself is a part of the Federation International d’Escrime (FIE, seated in Switzerland). The Encinitas Fencing Academy is located in the San Diego Division of the USFA’s Pacific Coast Section (PCS).
